Can I use WhatsApp on my phone and connect it to an API at the same time?

Until recently this was impossible, and it is the question we get most. Connecting a number to the WhatsApp API meant losing it from the phone: the app stopped working, whoever had been answering lost their tool, and the whole team had to move to a different interface the same day.

Coexistence ended that. The number is connected to the API and keeps working in the WhatsApp Business app on the phone, at the same time.

What each side sees

• The phone is unchanged: the person opens WhatsApp Business, sees their chats, replies, sends voice notes. Nothing changes for them.
• Your system receives everything that comes into the number over a webhook, and can send through the API. It also receives an echo of what is sent from the phone, so your system knows that conversation has already been handled.
• The chat history from the phone is imported when you connect, so you don't start from an empty inbox.

⚠ What to know before you decide

• The phone has to stay on and online. This is not optional — see what happens if I leave the phone turned off.
• Meta does not charge you for what leaves the phone. Only messages sent through the API are billed.
• It does not make your system the owner of the conversation. If the human replies first from the phone, they replied: your automation has to be ready for that, and that is exactly what the echo is for.

And the question behind the question: can I take it with me later?

Yes. You own your WhatsApp account (WABA) and your number, not the platform you use. If you want to change providers tomorrow, you take them with you. It is the best answer to "what if the platform disappears?", and it's worth asking anyone before you sign.
